Abbotsford Map

Abbotsford is the largest city in the Fraser Valley and sits on a broad agricultural plain south of the Fraser River, roughly 75 kilometres east of Vancouver. It borders the United States to the south at the Sumas crossing, and the flatlands around Sumas Prairie, a shallow lake drained in the 1920s for agricultural use, remain in active production with blueberry fields, raspberry farms, and greenhouse operations covering large portions of the eastern municipality.

City Centre and Urban Areas

The urban core sits on higher ground to the west and north, with South Fraser Way and Clearbrook Road carrying most commercial traffic through a largely car-oriented landscape of box stores, car dealerships, and chain restaurants. Mill Lake, a small urban park near the centre, provides walking trails and a modest waterfall feature. The University of the Fraser Valley has its main campus in Abbotsford, contributing a younger demographic and cultural activity to the city. The Abbotsford International Airport on the eastern edge handles cargo and some passenger service, and the annual Abbotsford International Airshow is one of the largest aviation events in Canada.

Community and Demographics

The city has a long-established Mennonite community that settled in the area in the early and mid-twentieth century, and a large Punjabi Sikh community with roots in the Fraser Valley going back more than a hundred years. South Asian businesses, gurdwaras, and cultural institutions are a visible and active part of the community landscape across several neighbourhoods. More recently, Abbotsford has seen significant growth from families moving east from Metro Vancouver in search of more affordable housing, drawn by Highway 1 access and the relative proximity to the regional employment market.
