Chilliwack Map

Chilliwack occupies a wide agricultural plain in the eastern Fraser Valley, bounded by the Fraser River to the north and the Cascade Mountains to the south and east. It is one of the principal agricultural municipalities in British Columbia, with the Vedder River flowing through the city and the broad flatlands of Sumas Prairie visible to the southeast. The city lies roughly 100 kilometres east of Vancouver along Highway 1.

City Centre and Sardis

Downtown Chilliwack sits on higher ground along Yale Road and Vedder Road, with a commercial core that has undergone gradual redevelopment over the past two decades. Sardis, to the south near the Vedder River, is a large suburban neighbourhood with shopping centres, schools, and newer residential subdivisions that have grown significantly since the 1990s. The Vedder Canal, dug in the early twentieth century as part of the Sumas Lake drainage project, runs through the city and is a popular location for salmon fishing in season.

Agricultural Character and Surroundings

Much of the land surrounding the urban core is protected by the Agricultural Land Reserve and remains in active production, with berry farms, dairy operations, and greenhouse nurseries visible from the main roads. Sumas Prairie to the southeast was historically a large shallow lake drained in 1924 to create farmland, and it remains one of the most productive agricultural areas in the province. Cultus Lake Provincial Park to the south is a popular summer destination for swimming, camping, and water activities, drawing visitors from across the Lower Mainland. The mountains above the city provide access to backcountry trails and recreation areas in Chilliwack Lake Provincial Park.
