Kamloops Map

Kamloops sits at the confluence of the North and South Thompson Rivers in the southern interior of British Columbia, in a semi-arid landscape of rolling benchlands, sagebrush flats, and open ponderosa pine forest. It is the largest city in the Thompson-Nicola Regional District and functions as a significant service, transportation, and healthcare hub for a wide area of the province’s interior.

Downtown and the Thompson Rivers

The downtown core sits along the south bank of the South Thompson River, with Riverside Park providing green space along the waterfront and a pedestrian bridge connecting to the north shore. Victoria Street is the main commercial corridor, lined with local businesses, restaurants, and older brick storefronts that give the downtown a compact, walkable character. The rail history of the city is visible in the CN Rail yards that run through the valley bottom. Thompson Rivers University, on a bluff above the city centre, overlooks the confluence and draws a student population that contributes to the city’s service and hospitality economy.

Neighbourhoods and Recreation

Kamloops spreads across multiple benches and plateaus above the river valleys, with neighbourhoods like Sahali, Aberdeen, and Valleyview occupying elevated ground with views across the surrounding hills. The semi-arid climate, with hot dry summers and cold winters, shapes daily life and outdoor activity in ways distinct from the coast. Sun Peaks Resort, roughly 55 kilometres to the northeast, is a year-round mountain resort community with skiing in winter and mountain biking and hiking in summer. The Kamloops Lake to the west and the Thompson River corridor provide fishing, boating, and trail access within a short drive of the city.
