Langley City is a municipality in the Metro Vancouver regional district of British Columbia, situated in the southwestern corner of the province. Despite sharing a name with the much larger surrounding Township of Langley, Langley City is a distinct and separate municipality with its own council, covering an area of approximately 10 square kilometres. As of the 2021 census, the population stood at roughly 28,963, making it one of the more densely populated municipalities in the Fraser Valley area.
Geography and Layout
Langley City is bordered to the north by the Nicomekl River, which forms a natural boundary between the city and portions of the Township of Langley. The municipality is largely flat and developed, with a compact urban grid that reflects its origins as a regional commercial hub. 200th Street serves as a primary commercial corridor running through the heart of the city, connecting residential neighbourhoods to retail and service areas.
Neighbourhoods and Community
The city contains several distinct residential areas, including the established neighbourhoods of Nicomekl and Brydon, as well as newer infill developments that have emerged in response to regional population pressures. The Langley Civic Facility and adjacent park spaces provide gathering points for residents. The City Hall precinct anchors civic life in the downtown core, where a mix of local businesses, social services, and transit connections concentrate.
Transportation and Connectivity
Langley City is served by the South Fraser Perimeter Road and Highway 10, both of which provide regional road connections. TransLink bus routes link the municipality to Surrey and other parts of Metro Vancouver. Provincial and regional plans have identified Langley City as a future terminus for SkyTrain extensions, which is expected to influence density and land use patterns in the coming decades.
