Campbell River is a city on the east coast of Vancouver Island, situated along the Discovery Passage where it narrows between the island and Quadra Island. With a population of approximately 36,455, it serves as a regional hub for the northern portion of Vancouver Island, providing services in health care, retail, and education to surrounding communities. The city sits at the northern end of the Strait of Georgia and is flanked by the Vancouver Island Ranges to the west.
Geography and Natural Setting
The Campbell River itself flows through the city before emptying into Discovery Passage, and the broader watershed supports one of the most productive salmon runs on the coast. Elk Falls Provincial Park, located just west of the urban core, encompasses the dramatic falls of the Campbell River along with old-growth forest and a suspension bridge. To the northwest, Strathcona Provincial Park — British Columbia’s oldest provincial park — offers alpine terrain, glaciers, and backcountry access within a relatively short drive.
Neighbourhoods and Urban Layout
The city is divided into several distinct areas. Willow Point occupies the southern portion and includes residential streets alongside commercial development along the Island Highway. The Downtown core sits near the waterfront and hosts the Museum at Campbell River, which documents the history of the Lekwiltok people and early European settlement in the region. The North Campbell River neighbourhood lies across the river and includes both older residential areas and newer suburban development.
Economy and Industry
Historically, Campbell River’s economy was anchored by forestry and fishing, and both industries continue to play a role in local employment. The Discovery Harbour marina and waterfront area reflect the city’s longstanding connection to commercial and sport fishing, with chinook salmon fishing having drawn visitors to the region for well over a century. Tourism, health care, and retail trade have grown as economic contributors, supported in part by the city’s role as a service centre for smaller communities throughout the Discovery Islands and northern Vancouver Island.
