Courtenay is a city located on the eastern coast of Vancouver Island, in the Comox Valley region of British Columbia. With a population of approximately 25,599, it serves as the primary commercial and administrative hub of the valley, situated along the banks of the Courtenay River. The city is flanked by the Beaufort Mountain Range to the west and the waters of Comox Harbour to the east, giving it a setting defined by both inland and coastal geography.
History and Development
The area around Courtenay has been home to the K’ómoks First Nation for thousands of years, with the river and surrounding estuary providing rich resources. European settlement began in the mid-nineteenth century, with agricultural activity spreading through the valley floor. The city was incorporated in 1915 and gradually developed as a regional centre, attracting services, retail, and light industry to support the broader Comox Valley population.

Courtenay encompasses several distinct areas, including the Old City Quarter, which concentrates heritage buildings, independent shops, and restaurants along Fifth Street and the surrounding blocks. Courtenay’s position within the Comox Valley places it within reach of Mount Washington Alpine Resort, located on the slopes above the city, as well as the estuary and marine environment of Comox Bay. The Courtenay Riverway trail system follows the river through the urban core, connecting parkland and natural areas. The city shares close ties with the neighbouring communities of Comox and Cumberland, together forming the economic and social fabric of the broader valley.
