Kitimat is a district municipality located in northwestern British Columbia, situated at the head of the Douglas Channel approximately 60 kilometres south of Terrace. With a population of around 8,236 residents, Kitimat serves as an important industrial and transportation hub for the region. The community was established in the 1950s as a planned town to support the aluminum smelting industry, and its economy remains closely tied to resource extraction and processing.
The municipality is home to the Kitimat Smelters Corporation facility, one of Canada’s major aluminum producers, which has historically been the primary employer and economic driver for the area. The town’s location provides access to deep-water shipping through the Douglas Channel, making it strategically significant for export operations. Kitimat’s residents benefit from proximity to outdoor recreation opportunities, including fishing, hiking, and water-based activities in the surrounding Coast Mountains region. The community maintains essential services, schools, and retail facilities to support its population, and continues to serve as a regional centre for the northern coast.
