New Hazelton is a small community in northwestern British Columbia, located in the Bulkley Valley region approximately 90 kilometres south of Terrace. With a population of around 700 residents, it serves as a service centre for the surrounding rural areas and serves as a gateway to the northern interior of the province.
The community is situated near the confluence of the Bulkley River and Morice River, in an area rich in Indigenous Tsimshian and Gitxaala heritage. New Hazelton was established as a townsite in the early 20th century and developed as a commercial and transportation hub for the region. The area is known for its natural resources, including forestry and fishing, which have historically shaped the local economy. Outdoor recreation opportunities, including access to river activities and nearby wilderness areas, draw visitors and residents interested in northern British Columbia’s landscape.
