West Kelowna Map

West Kelowna is a city on the western shore of Okanagan Lake in the Okanagan region of British Columbia, incorporated as a municipality in 2007. With a population of approximately 36,078, it sits across the lake from the city of Kelowna, connected primarily by the William R. Bennett Bridge. The city occupies a stretch of benchland and hillside terrain that rises steeply from the lakeshore, giving much of the residential area elevated views over the water and surrounding valley.

Neighbourhoods and Communities

West Kelowna encompasses several distinct communities, including Westbank, which serves as the commercial and administrative core, along with Lakeview Heights, Glenrosa, and Casa Loma. The Westbank First Nation, a self-governing Indigenous nation, holds reserve lands within and adjacent to the city’s boundaries and operates independently under its own governance structure. The area around Boucherie Road in Lakeview Heights is well known for its concentration of estate wineries and vineyards.

Recreation and Natural Setting

The city borders Okanagan Lake to the east and is adjacent to Okanagan Lake Provincial Park, which provides camping and beach access along the western shoreline. Gellatly Bay is a popular waterfront area offering a heritage nut orchard, walking trails, and boat launch facilities. Hiking and trail networks extend into the benchlands above the city, with connections to regional trail systems used year-round by residents and visitors. Bear Creek Provincial Park, located a short distance north of the city, provides further access to canyon scenery and campgrounds along Bear Creek.

Economy and Land Use

The local economy draws on retail and commercial services centred in Westbank, viticulture and wine production across the bench areas, and construction activity driven by ongoing residential development. The Westbank First Nation plays a significant role in commercial development within the region, operating shopping centres and mixed-use properties. The city’s proximity to Kelowna, the regional hub of the Okanagan, shapes its function as a growing residential community with direct highway and bridge connections to broader regional employment and services.
