West Vancouver is a district municipality located on the north shore of Burrard Inlet, in the Metro Vancouver Regional District of British Columbia. With a population of approximately 44,122, it is one of Canada’s most affluent communities, known for its dramatic coastal mountain scenery, upscale residential neighbourhoods, and convenient access to both nature and the city of Vancouver.
Geography and Natural Setting
The municipality stretches from the shores of Horseshoe Bay in the west to the Capilano River in the east, with the rugged terrain of the North Shore Mountains rising sharply to the north. Cypress Provincial Park, which sits within the district’s boundaries, offers year-round outdoor recreation including skiing, snowboarding, hiking, and mountain biking. The Spirit Trail and the historic Baden-Powell Trail attract walkers and cyclists throughout the warmer months.
Neighbourhoods and Community
West Vancouver comprises several distinct neighbourhoods, including Ambleside, Dundarave, Caulfeild, and Horseshoe Bay. Ambleside serves as the community’s commercial and cultural hub, featuring the Ambleside Seawalk, local shops, and the West Vancouver Memorial Library. The British Columbia Ferry terminal at Horseshoe Bay connects the district to Bowen Island, the Sunshine Coast, and Vancouver Island.
History and Culture
West Vancouver was incorporated as a district municipality in 1912, separating from the District of North Vancouver. The community has long maintained a strong arts presence, supported by institutions such as the Silk Purse Arts Centre in Ambleside and the annual Harmony Arts Festival. The district is also home to Hollyburn Country Club, one of the oldest ski clubs in western Canada, established in the 1920s on the slopes of Hollyburn Mountain.
